What Is a Salary?

A salary is the fixed pay an employer agrees to give an employee in exchange for their work, usually quoted as an annual figure even though it actually lands in your bank account weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. The difference is that unlike an hourly pay, salary does not vary depending on the number of hours worked; rather, it remains constant regardless of how many hours you’ve put in at your workplace. However, people often want to find out their salary per hour or per week because it helps them to make various decisions regarding money.

Manual Formula for Salary Conversion

If you need to convert the salary from one pay period to another manually, it will be relatively easy after you learn about your schedule. Here is what the basic equation would look like:

Annual Salary = Rate × Periods Worked Per Year

Depending on your pay frequency, “periods worked per year” changes:

Hourlyhourly rate × hours worked per week × paid weeks per year

Dailydaily rate × days worked per week × paid weeks per year

Weeklyweekly rate × paid weeks per year

Bi-weekly bi-weekly rate × (paid weeks ÷ 2)

Monthlymonthly rate × 12

After you’ve figured out the annual salary, you can work backward to figure out anything else; for example, hourly wage = annual salary / (hours worked in a week * weeks paid in a year). In order to calculate the net income, you’ll need to deduct such things as tax, pension funds, insurance, etc.

Net Salary = Gross Salary − (Tax % + Retirement %) × Gross − Insurance − Other Deductions

It works great for simple rough estimates but when it comes to including overtime hours, or unpaid vacation, or different deduction schemes, things can get tricky, which is why a calculator is such a good idea because it combines all of those in one go.

About the TankCalculator’s Salary Calculator

Most salary calculators only do one thing — convert an annual number into an hourly one, or vice versa. This tool goes further by combining three related jobs into a single interface: converting pay between every common frequency, working out what a raise actually means in dollar terms, and comparing two salaries that might be quoted in completely different pay periods.

Our Salary Converter tab is the central part of our calculator. This feature will take your entered sum and period of payment and will convert the number according to your own work schedule (number of hours daily and weekly, as well as weeks annually), showing you a complete list of conversions according to all eight types of payment (hourly, weekly, bi-weekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual). Moreover, we have an additional “adjusted” column that shows how your income changes when taking into account vacation.

Beyond the basic conversion, it layers in overtime calculations (using your hourly rate, overtime hours, and rate multiplier) and a gross-to-net breakdown that factors in income tax percentage, retirement contributions, insurance, and other deductions. The Raise Calculator tab reuses your working schedule to show what a percentage increase means in hourly and monthly terms, not just the headline annual number, while the Compare Salaries tab normalizes two different salary figures — even if they’re quoted in different frequencies — down to a common annual basis so the comparison is actually apples-to-apples.

Benefits of Using the TankCalculator’s Salary Calculator

Figuring out what a job offer really pays — after accounting for your actual working hours, unpaid time off, overtime, and deductions — is harder than it sounds when you’re doing it with a plain calculator or a spreadsheet, and small mistakes in that math can lead to accepting an offer that pays less than it first appears. This calculator eliminates all of that guessing game, and thus becomes an extremely helpful tool when you need to compare two job offers, both of which are made in various salary frequencies, when you are looking for a raise and want to know how much of it you should get, or even just understand the difference between your gross salary and your take-home pay. Since it stores your previous calculations and allows you to export them into a CSV file, it becomes your little personal record keeper that can be used by your recruiter, hiring manager or financial advisor.
